Two remarkable medics

This is the story of two remarkable medics: Robert E Wright & Kenneth J More (both age 20) of the 2nd battalion 501 Parachute Infantry, 101st Airborne.

The two medics set up an aide station in an 11th century church in the small village of Angoville Au Plain (2023 population about 50).

When the 501 had to withdraw to straighten the lines, the medics stayed behind with about 80 wounded who could not be moved. They treated the wounded of both sides, insisting that all weapons be left outside. At one point a German MG team kicked open a door, saw what they were doing, the gunner crossed himself and left them alone. God must have approved of what they were doing, as a mortar shell came through the roof, striking this tile, but failed to explode, sparing everyone inside.

The German machine gun team started to come through this door

The inside of the church. They have kept the original benches and you can still see the blood stains of the soldiers (American and German paratroopers).

Both medics survived the war and lived into their 90s. Robert Wright had his ashes buried in the church cemetery.
