La Poterie Ridge

Dad earned a Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry during the Battle of la Poterie Ridge, July 07, 1944.  It must have been a tough fight, two of the three battalion commanders were wounded on the same day. He started out with four helpers, three were wounded and one "Went crazy." The citation reads:

Kyle and I by the monument near the ridge. (we are facing the ridge)

That is the ridge behind us

More shots of the ridge

Our guide tried to take us to the top of the ridge. But we couldn't get very close (all private property now). You couldn't see much. This guy was raising Guinea Pigs.

The Monument to the 82nd Airborne and Lt. Kelso C. Horne at Hill 95, Normandy. Lt Horne was with the 508th PIR and found himself on the cover of Life Magazine. His ashes are buried in the rock, This was part of the same engagement as where dad earned his Silver Star - a bit to the northwest

  1. No doubt, you and your family must be very proud of your father's actions that day.
