Tanks on display
I have always loved tanks, so much so I joined the Armor Branch when I graduated from ROTC in 1986. These are the various tanks on display we saw throughout our trip (in no particular order)
British Centaur - Pegasus Bridge Museum
The markings on the turret are to help accompanying infantry identfy targets to the tank crew
Churchill AVRE (Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers) - Juno Beach
Trivia = Churchill tanks were named after John Curchill, Duke of Marlborough, not Winston
Two views of a Churchill Crocodile (Flame Thrower)- Bayeux
Churchill IV - Fort Hillman
Sherman of the Free French - Utah Beach
Not my photo, it was cloudy and rainy so my photo did not turn out
A German Hetzer tank destroyer - the only German tank I recall seeing - Bayeux
M3 Stuart - sword Beach
M4 Sherman "Rhino" (Hedgecutter) - Carentan
I like the fake cows in the background
M4(A)4 Sherman - Airborne Museum St Mere Eglise
Front and back views of a M4(A)4 DD (Dual Drive) Sherman - Juno Beach
The idea of the DD was to allow it to "swim" ashore from a landing craft
M5(A)(1) Stuart (a very nice replica) - Carentan
M7 Priest (Self Propelled Artilery) - Sword Beach
M10 Tank Destroyer - Bayeux
Another M10 Tank Destroyer - Omaha Beach
The inside of a turret, As I recall this is a Somua, an early war French tank used by the Germans against the American Airborne
